CE Requirements

Insurance CE Requirements by State

Baseline continuing-education requirements for resident individual producers in all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Important: These are baseline requirements for resident individual producers with major lines. Requirements change and may differ for adjusters, title, limited lines, specialty products, first renewals, exemptions, or nonresidents. Always verify with your state regulator before purchasing a course. Last reviewed August 1, 2026.

The standard framework

Most jurisdictions follow a similar structure, with important exceptions noted per state below:

Renewal cycle Most commonly every 2 years (biennial); a few states use 3- or 4-year cycles
Total CE hours Commonly 24 hours per cycle (range spans ~10–48 depending on state and lines)
Ethics requirement Most states require 3 hours of ethics within the total
Non-resident reciprocity Non-resident producers generally satisfy CE by staying compliant in their resident home state

Specialty product training

Certain lines require dedicated training in addition to general CE:

Annuities Commonly a 4-hour one-time training under the NAIC Suitability Model
Long-Term Care (LTC) Often an 8-hour initial course + 4-hour refresher each cycle
Flood (NFIP) Commonly a 3-hour NFIP course
